3D/4D Sonography – the message out of your belly

The 3D/4D-ultrasonic instrument produces sensational images from the baby in the womb, a recording like television – in fact live. You can see what your child is actually doing e.g. smiling, swallowing, poking the tongue out, hide itself behind the hands, sucking thumbs and much more...
The images out of the uterus are three dimensional, the fourth dimension is the so called "real time" in which the images are transmitted.
A 3D-image is comparable with a photograph using a camera. The 4D image is comparable with videotaping via camcorder because of movements.
The 3D/4D-sonography has been known since the 1990ies. Our centre is one of the first applying this technology and using this examination method already since 1996. Within this period you find our first 3D-images in the web (http://legacy.qualimedic.de/ShowUSS-10)
We also trained several colleagues from all over Germany during our training courses in 3D/4D-sonography.

What is the use of 3D/4D-ultrasonic screenings

First of all I want to mention that this examination does not replace conventional ultrasonic diagnostics but can be carried out additionally. The conventional ultrasonic diagnostic is an examination of the baby’s vital organs. In contrast the 3D/4D-ultrasonic displays the surface of the child. Any changes or diseases are visually apparent like e.g. foot or hand posture or the forms of face or ear. Most important is the observation of the child’s behaviour. Another advantage is that it is much easier for parents to see and understand any features, normal or abnormal, that with traditional 2-D is very difficult or impossible for them to decipher.
Due to the pin sharp images/picture recordings of the 3D/4D-ultrasonic parents discover already in the womb similarities between the unborn child and other family members. Psychologists call this one of the first parent-child relationships. To sustain and enforce this relationship the examination is video recorded. Perhaps you can imagine what a joyful experience it would be for your still unborn child to look at these recollections one day.
As mentioned above we must again point out that the 3D/4D-ultrasonic testing is a superficial illustration of the child and the organs were not checked. So, organic diseases cannot be excluded. We strongly recommend to perform an additional conventional ultrasonic scan.

When is the right time for 3D/4D-sonography

In principle you can carry out the examination at any time. We know from experience that the time between the 27th and 28th week of pregnancy is most preferable. If you plan such an examination, do not miss this point of time.

To arrange for 3D/4D-ultrasonic examination

  • Do not treat your belly with any body oil or body lotion 5-6 days before examination, because these substances change the results to the worse
  • Please bring along a video tape (even if you do not have a video recorder) and a CD-ROM so we can record the examination
  • The examination is not included in the health plan and will be charged by IGeL
  • Children under 12 years of age are not permitted to attend the examination to avoid infection with children’s diseases

Examination process

The 3D/4D-ultrasonic testing is comparable to the conventional scan, but carried out with another method and by means of a special ultrasonic probe.
The examination lasts for 20-30 minutes. But if the child is positioned unfavourable, this time may be exceeded; therefore you should plan with more time.
Afterwards you get a series of ultrasonic images. The coloured pictures were burned on CD-ROM and the movements are recorded on video tape.
